The Air Force Research Laboratory, Warfighter Readiness Research Division in Mesa, Arizona recently required updates to the visual system for the F-16 Experimental Deployable Tactics Trainer (XDTT) simulators to be delivered to Aviano Air Base in Italy. The F-16 XDTT’s are medium fidelity, in-theater training systems for keeping pilots proficient between missions. The systems needed to be easily deployable and required an integrated visual system architecture requiring minimal maintenance.
To meet its needs the Warfighter Readiness Research Division chose Immersive Display Solutions integrated visual display offering, which included two (2) portable fiberglass 3-meter MiniDome’s, MetaVR VRSG visuals, Projection Design FL32 WUXGA LED projectors, and Scalable Display EasyBlendFX geometry warp and edge blend calibration software.
Each MiniDome system consisted of a 3-meter (diam.) transportable dome providing 220° horizontal x 90° (+60/-30) vertical field of view, integrated with six (6) FL32 WUXGA projectors with wide-angle lenses. The overall system has an average blended resolution of 11.5 million pixels equaling approximately 4.8 arc-min/OLP. The high fidelity projected views were generated by MetaVR’s Virtual Reality Scene Generator (VRSG) software tightly integrated with Scalable Display EasyBlendFX for curved surfaces. The medium fidelity XDTT simulator consists of an F-16 Block 30 aircraft shell with actual F-16 Operation Flight Program (OFP), a high-fidelity aircraft stick and throttle, and LCD touch screen instrument panel providing the essential F-16 cockpit switches.
